In this guide, we want to show you how to fix a frozen Android or iPhone. There are many reasons for a phone to freeze up. However, most cases are simple to resolve with a quick restart.
If restarting your phone doesn’t help, it might require a force-restart. In severe cases, it may require recovery mode to return the mobile phone to its original settings. Unfortunately, that tends to result in the loss of quite a lot of settings and possibly some data, unless your backup is up to date.
As such, factory resets are a last resort. If you get stuck at any stage, open the HAILaGEEK app and have a tech come to you. Our technicians are always ready to help guide you through the process.
“My iPhone is frozen and won’t do anything!” When your iPhone freezes, it cuts off your workflow and social life. How do you find out what’s happening with your friends? What if you need to finish up a project before a big meeting? Often, the result is little more than frustration and a loss of productivity.
Still, when your Apple phone freezes, it might be an easy fix. While the cause might be a bigger issue, let’s focus on fixing your immediate problem.
First, let’s make sure we have the right problem. If it looks like a specific app is frozen, your phone might be okay. Try these steps to force-close a frozen app.
• iPhone X or later: Swipe up from the bottom of your screen. This opens a series of preview windows that show the open apps. Swipe around to find the frozen app and swipe up on it to force-close the app.
• iPhone SE, 8, and earlier: Double-tap the home button below the screen. Swipe through the previews until you find the frozen app. Swipe up to force it to close.
If this happens a lot with one specific app, it’s likely an issue that app’s developers need to solve. For now, consider deleting it to put an end to your troubles.
However, if the app won’t close, you have a frozen phone on your hands. Continue with this guide and let’s figure it out together.
If your iPhone doesn’t turn on at all, it might be a simple matter of a drained battery. This happens occasionally when people let their Apple phone die and wait too long to recharge it.
First, plug your phone into a wall outlet or a USB port on your computer. (Be sure the computer isn’t in sleep mode, though). Let the phone charge for a few minutes before you try to turn it on.
[A few minutes later…]
So, now that your phone had a chance to gain a little power, what do you see?
If your phone shows a battery outline with a red sliver, it needs more time to charge. Give it another 15 - 20 minutes and try to turn the phone on again.
Don’t see anything at all? Try a different charger, charging cord, and outlet. If it continues not to charge, it’s time to get it diagnosed by a HAILaGEEK technician.
When the screen of your iPhone freezes, it’s usually a simple problem to solve. Typically, a quick restart helps. Here’s what to do with your frozen phone.
• Press and hold either side of the volume until the slider pops up.
• Swipe the slide and wait about 30 seconds for the phone to power off.
• To restart the iPhone, press and hold the right volume button for about 5 seconds until the Apple logo appears.
• Press and hold the top-right power button.
• When the slider appears, drag it over.
• Wait 30 seconds for the phone to shut down.
• Press and hold the power button for about 5 seconds until you see the Apple logo.
If your frozen phone is back in action, that’s great!
If you need another fix, keep reading and let’s try another tactic.
Is your phone’s screen still lifeless? If you still have a frozen phone mucking up your day, there’s a way to force it to restart.
• Press and release the volume-up button.
• Do the same with the volume-down button.
• Press and hold the button on the right until you see the Apple logo.
• Hold down the volume-down button and the right buttons simultaneously.
• Continue to hold them down until you see the Apple logo pop up.
• Press and hold the home button and the power buttons.
• If you see the Apple logo, let go.
There are a few situations you might encounter at this point. Hopefully, your frozen phone is functional once more. However, the following screens mean you have another issue to handle:
• The Apple logo appears but nothing happens.
• You see a red or blue screen.
If you encounter these situations, your next option is to update or restore the phone in recovery mode. First, connect your phone to a computer. Here’s what to do next:
• Open Finder (Mac users) or iTunes (Windows users).
• Finder: in the left panel, select your phone.
• iTunes: click on the phone icon.
Now that you have access to your frozen phone, it’s time to put it into recovery mode.
• Tap the volume-up button and then the volume-down button.
• Hold down the side button until the recovery screen appears.
• Hold down the volume-down and right buttons simultaneously.
• Continue to hold these buttons until the recovery mode screen appears.
• Hold down the Home button and right buttons together until it opens recovery mode.
From recovery mode, click Update if you see a prompt on your computer. This process attempts to update the phone without upending your settings.
If the update can’t run or simply doesn’t help, you might need to restore your phone. At this point, it’s a good idea to work with a technician. At HAILaGEEK, we offer tech repair that meets you where you are.
Whether you’re at home, work, or in a coffee shop, a trusted technician heads your way.
If the prior tactics are no help, the next step is to restore your iPhone to the original settings. When you have a backup of your phone in iCloud or on your computer, it’s easy to restore your files and settings. Without a backup, you at least have whatever information synced from your Apple ID.
Typically, this includes texts, contacts, preferences. Sometimes, this helps save some of your photos, too.
To Restore your iPhone, get it into recovery mode [steps included above]. From there, simply click Restore.
Already left that screen? Connect your phone to your computer again, go back to recovery mode, and click Update.
After the update, it prompts you to connect your phone to WiFi and sign in. Once you login in, it prompts you to restore from a backup.
At this point, your frozen phone should be back in action. However, if it continues to freeze or restoring doesn’t work, it might be a hardware issue. One of our technicians can help you troubleshoot further to determine the core issue.
Let’s take a look at how to fix a frozen phone with Android. The process will be similar to iPhone, but there are (of course) key differences in the directions.
If you run into trouble along the way, the technicians at HAILaGEEK are always ready to lend a hand!
If you still have the ability to use your phone but see a particular app frozen, force close that app. Here’s what to do.
1. Display your open apps. Some newer Androids allow you to swipe up from the bottom of the screen; on others, you can simply press the “3 lines” or “square” icon at the bottom left.
2. Look through the preview windows until you see your frozen app.
3. Swipe it up and off the screen (if you navigate left and right). Or, send it off to the right or left (if you had to swipe vertically to see the running apps).
4. If that doesn’t work, open Settings and go to Apps. Then, tap the app you want to close and choose “Force Stop.” (This might also be under “App info.”)
5. If the app continues to cause problems, consider deleting (uninstalling) it altogether.
If an app isn’t the issue, try plugging your phone in. This helps if your phone doesn’t turn on at all and cuts through the basic possibility of a battery with too low a charge.
Use a wall charger or a USB port on an active computer. Let it charge for a few minutes.
If there’s no indication that it’s charging, try a different outlet or charger. In the event that doesn’t help, move on to the next step.
When you see a frozen phone screen, a black screen, or a solid color, first try to restart it. Hold down the power button and select the option Restart. Alternatively, power off your phone and wait around 30 seconds before starting it again.
If the previous tactic didn’t work, try to force your frozen phone to restart.
On recent-model Androids, this process means holding down the power button for around 30 seconds. Some models require a bit less time while others require more. Either way, you should see signs of your phone restarting.
For many Samsung models, it’s possible to force a restart with this combination of buttons. Press and hold the volume-down and right-side power button. Hold them down for about 10 seconds.
Do you have an older model Android phone with a removable battery? Popping the battery out and reinserting it is one way to force the restart. This is helpful when holding down any combination of buttons doesn’t seem to do anything.
When your frozen phone simply won’t come back to life, the final home remedy is a factory reset. Remember that this tactic resets your phone and erases data on your device. So, this option is best for those who have a backup or are certain that none of the data on the phone is needed.
Note: even if your information is synced to your Google account, when possible, you should try to conserve some of your more essential data. This includes emails, contacts, and a bit of other data.
Here’s how to reset a frozen phone to factory defaults:
1. First, if the phone is frozen, hold down the power button to shut it down.
2. Hold the recovery mode buttons for your model. For example, a Google Pixel requires you to hold the power and volume-down buttons. Samsung models instead require you to hold down the power and volume-up buttons.
3. On Samsung models, you should eventually see the logo and then “installing system update.” Then, you see “No command.” After 15 seconds or so, it enters recovery mode.
4. Use the volume buttons to navigate the menu. Go to Wipe Data or Factory Reset. Press the power button to choose this option.
5. Click Yes to confirm your choice. Then, the phone begins to be restored to its original factory settings.
6. After the restore process completes, it takes you back to the recovery mode menu. From there, hit the power button and choose Reboot system. This restarts your device normally.
If your device returns to normal, it asks you to choose a network and sign in to your account. For those with a backup, it’ll prompt you to restore the backup.
